I bet many men and women are not aware that breast cancer is not just a woman’s disease.
A Non-profit group formed by Florida State University Students, and their instructor William J.P. Smith Jr. a breast cancer survivor himself want to spread the word.
Statistic show that only a half to one percent of breast cancers that are found in a year in the US are male, so it is understandable that breast cancer would be considered a “women’s disease.”
Smith interjects that he feels that if more men were checked for the disease the statistic may be in the ten to twelve percent range. Breast cancer in men is seen worldwide, and is usually diagnosed in the late stage when it is found.
You do not have to suffer from gynecomastia (large male breasts) to have male breast cancer.
The Cause Of Male Breast Cancer
The cause of male breast cancer is unknown, but a man’s risk does increase with age, hereditary factors, exposure to radiation, history of testicular cancer, history of liver disease, history of prostate cancer and treatment using hormonal therapy, and if a man suffers with Klinefelter syndrome which is a genetic disorder that produces an extra chromosome.
Male Breast Cancer Diagnosis & Male Breast Cancer Symptoms
Usually male breast cancer is diagnosed after a man complains of unusual bump or lump that is painful or sore. Then a biopsy is done where tissue is taken to examine and confirm a cancer diagnosis.
Treatment Of Male Breast Cancer
The treatment for male breast cancer is the same as for women. It will involve surgery to remove breast tissue called a mastectomy. Due to the fact that most men do not have large breast tissue sparing surgery is not performed.
Follow up treatment following a mastectomy can include chemotherapy to kill off and destroy any cancer cells that might have been missed. Depending on the type of breast cancer, hormonal therapy may or may not be given.
IF you have found this interesting please pass it on to other men, and women and further assist Mr. Smith and his FSU student’s breast awareness campaign goal of making men more aware of this dangerous and deadly disease.
